Hi friends! This week I’ve been staying in Kim’s apartment trying to work on my album. I, of course, got super sick as soon as I got here. I haven’t been able to track vocals, but I have written a bunch of new songs! I’m playing them at this show in Brooklyn on Thursday, and you should all come out for it.

Dear Internet,

Do you remember when I tried to record a year’s worth of covers with the month name in them? Well, this year I decided to try again and actually finish this time. Considering that I only did two last time -and only posted the recording of one- I haven’t set the bar very high. Can y’all make sure I at least make it through March this time?

Anyway, here’s January. I chose Black Dove (January) by Tori Amos, as it’s a favorite from my days as a misanthropic teenager. None of this is mixed well, or mastered, so you’ll have to wait for a final mastered version at the end of the year when I finish.

As a bonus, here’s a short clip of my mouth tracking some of these vocals:

A video posted by Star St.Germain (@thisisstar) on

Here are lyrics:

She was a January girl
She never let on how insane it was
in that tiny kinda scary house
by the woods, by the woods, by the woods, by the woods
by the woods, by the woods, by the woods, by the woods

black-dove, black-dove
you’re not a helicopter
you’re not a cop-out either, honey
black-dove, black-dove
you don’t need a space ship
they don’t know you’ve already lived
on the other side of the galaxy
the other side of the galaxy
the other side of the galaxy

she had a January world
so many storms not right somehow
how a lion becomes a mouse
by the woods, by the woods, by the woods, by the woods
by the woods, by the woods, by the woods, by the woods

but I have to get to TEXAS
said I have to get to TEXAS
and I’ll give away my blue, blue dress
my blue dress

black-dove, black-dove
you’re not a helicopter
you’re not a cop-out either, honey
black-dove, black-dove
you don’t need a space ship
they don’t know you’ve already lived
on the other side of the galaxy
the other side of
the other side of the galaxy

but I have to get to TEXAS
said I have to get to TEXAS
and I’ll give away my blue dress
because cowboy
the snakes they are my kin
are my kin

she had a January girl
she never let on how insane it was
in that tiny kinda scary house
by the woods, by the woods, by the woods, by the woods
by the woods, by the woods, by the woods, by the woods
by the woods, by the woods, by the woods
black-dove

Almost a year ago now, I wrote some chiptune music for the Ardent Mobile Cloud Platform. After that, I was interested in seeing where the new chiptune stuff I was working on would intersect with the cello stuff I’ve been doing for years with This Can’t End Well. I started working on a new electronic set to play at the CBGB music festival in New York last fall, but then the venue closed unexpectedly & I didn’t perform.

I remember being in New York having lunch with Kim Boekbinder & she encouraged me to keep going with it. She had been through a similar transition into making dancy music, so I heeded her advice. I kept working on new experimental material, and I ended up contributing one of these tracks to The Sonic Arcana. Since then, I’ve been building out an EP of this new cello & chiptune material.

Kim asked me to play a show with her when she came to SF in June, so now, for the first time ever, I’m going to play this music for you – TONIGHT!

Remember how I was doing a piece of music for The Cheimonette Tarot? Well, the album is out now! All the tracks were inspired by readings from Eden, the deck’s creator, or directly from the cards themselves. This is the first time I’ve had new recorded music out in a long while, so I’m really super excited about it. The album is available pay-what-you-want on bandcamp. Special thanks to Eden, and all the other awesome musicians on this album. Have a listen!
